The fifth time Djokovic won ATP Dubai Championships
Novak Djokovic extended the unbeaten series to 21 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the ATP Dubai Championships final on February 29.
Novak Djokovic 2-0 Stefanos Tsitsipas
One day after saving three match-points in the dramatic semi-final against Gael Monfils, Djokovic rediscovered his inherent level when he successfully transformed all three break-points in the final, to take home the ATP minor 79th title in the career.
For the first time in tournament history, the number one seed beat the second seed in the final. Four times the same, the championship always fell to the second seed.
The first set is mostly dominated by serves. Djokovic attacks Tsitsipas’s left hand with deep balls. That strategy brought the game to win the first ball for Serbian tennis players to lead 5-3. Djokovic closed the opening set with a good game, after a backhand along the line scored the winner.
In the second set, the number one seed had the advantage before winning the delivery game at 2-2 draw, but in the next game, Tsitsipas did the same after an opponent’s faulty forehand. In the Greek tennis player game when the score was 4-4, Djokovic made good use of a series of consecutive mistakes to win the game. The world’s number one player actively takes the pace of the game through durable balls and cross-dribbles. Just like the first set, Djokovic ended the match with a winner along the line.
Missing the chance to win the first title in Dubai after two consecutive seasons in the final, 21-year-old Tsitsipas was regretful.
This is Djokovic’s fifth championship in the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai. He is still three less than Roger Federer’s record here. Champion Djokovic received $ 565,705 prize money and 500 points accumulated on the ATP rankings. Runner-up Tsitsipas has 300 ATP points and $ 284,485 bonus.
