The organizers hope that the participation of the former world number one players will help the tournament become more attractive.
Sharapova owns 36 WTA titles, including 5 Grand Slam and is one of six players who won the Career Grand Slam (winning all four different Grand Slam titles).
Even in the 2010 Cincinnati Open debut, Sharapova reached the final and won the runners-up after losing to Kim Clijsters in the final match. On the journey to the first championship here in 2011, Masha defeated four players in the top 15 in the world. She has a record of 13 wins and 3 losses in Cincinnati. For the last time, Sharapova stopped at the semi-finals in the 2014 season.
Meanwhile, Venus Williams won all 49 WTA titles with 7 Grand Slam, along with finalists in four different Grand Slam tournaments. The Williams sister also won the Olympic gold medal in Sydney in 2000, in addition to 14 Grand Slams in a total of 22 WTA doubles titles (both paired with sister Serena).
Having attended the Cincinnati Open seven times but Venus’s best achievement is only to reach the semi-finals in 2012, where the American player loses under the hands of Li Na – who then defeats Angelique Kerber to win the championship. The last time Venus participated in the tournament was 2017.
2019 Cincinnati Open will take place from August 12 to August 18 in the city of the same name in the state of Ohio (USA). Here last year, Novak Djokovic made the mark as the first player in history to acquire the full nine Masters titles, after the defeat in the previous five finals. In the women’s singles, Kiki Bertens is holding the championship.
